One run. It has been the mark of this year's Lady Dinos. Nine of their games have been decided by a run and Carbon has been on the losing end of eight of those. That also was the story in the first round of the state tournament as the lady Dinos lost 4-3 to North Sanpete and then 14-13 to Juab. It was a heart breaking end to a season with so much potential.
The North Sanpete game was a pitchers duel with the final run scored by the Hawks in the bottom of the seventh. Carbon hit the ball hard throughout the game, but the Hawks defense was able to handle it all. Three errors from the Lady Dinos hurt them on the defensive side.
In the final game for Carbon it was again a struggle from the usually solid defense that hurt the team. Coach Tony Pinedo was frustrated and not sure what was going on. He felt like it might be just the pressure of the play-off setting getting to the girls.
The Lady Dinos found themselves down 12-6 against Juab in the sixth and battled back to take a 13-12 lead going into the final frame. But again a little trouble on the defense allowed Juab to score the two runs they needed to take the win.
"I feel bad for the girls," stated Coach Pinedo, "but it was our worst defensive performance of the season. We were fortunate to be in the position to win the games, but our defense hurt us. It was hard on all of us. It wasn't for lack of effort, but they just tightened up. As a coach I feel responsible."
This was Coach Pinedo's final season and assistant coach Kirt Nunely will take over the reigns for the Lady Dinos next season in what will probably be a rebuilding year as many of the starting line-up are seniors this season.
