Bo Christensen of Carbon Country Recreation leads Layne Miler on a kayak trip down the San Rafael River. Runoff had barely begun last Thursday, but the Rec Department has other trips planned as water flow increases during warmer weather. River runs include the Green, Price and San Rafael rivers. Individuals can sign up for scheduled river runs, and County Rec will also conduct special tours for groups. Also on the list of scheduled excursions this year are guided tours through Nine Mile and Range Creek Canyons and the San Rafael Swell. More photos and river run schedule are on page 4B.
With good spring runoff ahead, Carbon County Recreation is anticipating two good months of river running this year. Last Thursday - the only good weather day between snow storms - the outdoor recreation coordinator Bo Christensen guided a small group in kayaks and one canoe on an excursion down the San Rafael River. The paddlers put in at Fuller Bottom and spend a day in the sunshine, surrounded by the imposing cliffs of the Swell. The San Rafael is a good river run for small boat novices because it lacks the more challenging rapids and drops of larger streams. The next scheduled trip down the San Rafael is set for June 4. Before then, Carbon Rec has set an excursion down the Price River from Woodside to the Green River for May 10. Trips down the Green are set for May 7 and 21, June 4, July 2 and 16, and August 6. All the trips down all the rivers feature the stunning geology of Castle Country.
