I live in East Carbon and recently some citizens who have had chickens/ducks/goats etc. were cited for their animals, many of which are considered to be pets.
The council and city attorney said that the law was inacted in 1977, so for 34 years unsuspecting citizens who have had such animals were never warned, or cited.
My question is why? Why now? The animal control laws state that one can have chickens, but the residential zones said the opposite? Why were some cited and others not? Why was there clearly discrimination? Why was there simply no warnings given? Some of these people knew absolutely nothing about the law as they always had such animals.
I am asking the citizens of East Carbon who have been cited, their friends, neighbors and family members to please sign a petiton to change the law and allow its citizens the rights to be self sufficent or self reliant. Our country is at the cusp of collapse, and all American's should be allowed to be self reliant.
There are already many towns and cities in Utah who have allowed chickens and rabbits. Those municipalities include Sunnyside, Centerville, Clinton, Draper, Holladay, Kaysville, Layton, Lehi, Orangeville, Midvale, Orem, Pleasant Grove. Provo, Riverton, St. George, West Jordan, Sandy, Cedar City, Grenola, Goshen, Salt Lake City and Heber.
If you want to sign a petition please call 888-6601 or you can sign one at Pup's Sinclair.
Why is our mayor and town council hell bent on making enemies with the citizens of East Carbon and Columbia?
Also, in Thursdays paper, Mr. Urbanik, a town councilman, said he would not want chickens next door to him and that they stink. Yet today I was at the home of a husband and wife who have had chickens and ducks for 20 some years and I did not smell them at all. Only people who do not properly care for such animals should be cited for abuse to such animals not to mention neighbors who should not have to put up with it.
Many people I have talked to said they would be willing to pay a yearly permit to keep their chickens/animals. Would this not benefit our city which is thousands of dollars in debt? The conclusion I come to is that our city law makers have cited these people because one of them has a personal vendetta to one chicken/animal owner, so he or they decided to make a few pay! How many town councillors have such animals also, but because they live on the fringe of town are allowed such animals to enjoy. This is also discriminatory!
There is also another question at hand here. Why did our City lawmakers not know that East Carbon has 10 zones, yet they only knew of four? We elected them to know. I have no problems with most of these men and woman on our council, but I ask them to be fair in all of their dealings with our towns citizens.
