Wellington Fire Chief John Powell has been wanting to create a true, 20-member department, but there has been a problem: the city has limited the allowed size to 15.
It was a question of cost of liability insurance and Workers Compensation payments.
However, when Powell told the council that boosting the size of the volunteer force would give the city better fire and medical emergency response, the council listened. "These guys are on a pretty good roll so far [as far as recruitment]," commented councilman Glen Wells, "so I say we support them."
Upon hearing that the impact on the strained city budget would not be a backbreaker, the council unanimously voted to raise the cap to 20 fire fighters.
