Lady Dinos set sights on state 3A championship

Sun Advocate sports reporter

The Lady Dinos head up to the Huntsman Center on the University of Utah campus this Thursday. They beat Richfield at home in the first round of play-offs last Saturday night to earn that chance. They will face off with Cedar at 7:30 pm. Cedar was the second seed out of Region 9. They beat Juan Diego on Saturday to move into the quarter final round.

Carbon has not faced Cedar or any region nine teams this season. The Redmen have two good outside shooting guards who do most of their shooting and four girls are in the 3A's top 10 in rebounds.

Coach Cami Carlson said that the Dinos and the Redmen size up fairly even. "This is one of the games we can't use their height as an excuse."

Cedar is quick and like to put on both a half court and full court defense. In other words; they are much like the Dinos in how they approach their game. Carslon feels like this will be a battle that will determine who has a better defense.

Carbon is working on a few defensive sets including their triangle D. Also they have concentrated on shooting off the dribble and a few other basics like making sure they do not get out of position as they play defense.

"At this point in the season, if they don't already have it, they never will," admitted Carlson. "We just worked on a few tools in our arsenal and get ready to play."

She also felt like Carbon has an advantage over Cedar because they have been deep in the state tournament last year. Several of her players have also had the opportunity to participate in a clinic at the Huntsman Center and so have played on the floor. Cedar has not had many trips to State in the past few years.

If the Dinos get through the Redmen then they will face either Delta or Hurricane. Delta beat Carbon in an overtime game early in the season, Since that game Carbon has not lost. Delta has stumbled a little and tied with Emery for the Region 12 top spot. That game would be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Tickets for the tournament can be purchased online at the Utah High School Activities Association website or at the door at the Huntsman Center.
