who gave very different performances, but in the end came out with much of the same in results. The Carbon Dinos faced the 5th ranked Park City on Tuesday and fought with everything they had. They came away with a heartbreaking 76-73 overtime loss.
On Saturday the team played Ben Lomond in a make up non region game. Ben Lomond was 0-3 in their region coming in. A lethargic Dino team struggled all night and suffered a 72-67 loss to them in front of a sparse home crowd.
On Tuesday the Dinos were hoping for an upset win to get themselves back on track. With a 19-9 second quarter run, it looked like Carbon could have a shot. The team was still holding a 52-47 edge heading into the final period of play. As the final seconds ticked down in regulation with the score tied, Carbon had possession and just could get their shot to drop. The Miners outscored the Dinos 9-6 in the extra frame and pulled out the win.
Colin Moynier had his best performance of the season with a double-double. He hit for 17 points and grabbed 12 boards. Gage Bigelow also had a great night on offense with 17. Clint Finkbiner also put up 14 as the Dinos fell just shot of a bit upset.
But on Saturday Carbon fell quickly behind and Coach Binaco called a time out and with a very vocal tirade, attempted to put a fire in his team. It seemed to help for a while as the Dinos pulled even in the first and then clung to a two point advantage going into the locker room.
But the fourth quarter saw Carbon playing catch up the rest of the game,Trailing six to seven points most of the rest of the way. Careless fouls from the Carbon defense and missed shots and free throws on the offensive end kept the Dinos from ever catching up. A few well timed threes as the final seconds of the game ticked away made it a closer score than it might have been.
Finkbiner was almost half of the offense for Carbon with 32 points including seven from downtown. Gage Bigelow was the only other Dino in double figures with 13.
Coach Bianco just shook his head after the game. "We played some of our best ball of the season last Tuesday night. We played like a team and worked our tails off and just didn't get the win. But tonight, it was frustrating, it was like they didn't want to be here. They need to step it up if we want any chance to make it to state."
Top ranked and region leading Wasatch is coming to play on Wednesday night. Game time is 5:15 p.m.
