Carbon High Wrestlers returned Saturday, Dec. 18, from a successful competition at the Desert Storm Tournament at Dixie High School in St. George. The tournament began Friday afternoon. Eighteen teams competed. These included: Spanish Fork, Tooele, Salem Hills, Desert Hills, Parowan, Pine View, Uinta, Canyon View, Virgin Valley-Nevada, Faith Lutheran-Las Vegas, and several others.
Carbon placed fourth, a very respectable position considering the field of competing schools. Carbon also forfeited the 215 pound weight class and Sammy Manarite was injured and defaulted at 152 pounds in the first round.
Carbon wrestlers advanced 10 into the medal rounds. Bryce Jackman captured the Championship at 119 pounds; defeating Dalton Fausett of Spanish Fork 18-4, pinning Beau Blackham of Uinta in the semi-finals, and decisioned Desert Hills' Devan Webb in the finals. Jackman's current record is 19 wins 1- loss.
Taylor O'Hearon took second at 160 pounds, David Fonnesbeck, currently 23-2, also earned second at 189 pounds, Wyatt Martinez at 140 and Stefan Larsen, 135, finished in third. Cody Hunt at 130 and T.J. Bettino at 112 pounds took fourth place. and Colton Sanderson finished sixth at 112 pounds.
The Junior Varsity tournament that was held concurrently with the varsity Desert Storm tournament. Carbon wrestlers earned solid medals as Tanner Cave at 130 pounds pinned all four of his opponents, giving him first place. Lane Neese, 145 pounds, won all four of his matches and earned first place and was named Outstanding JV wrestler in the tournament. Anthony Velasquez at 112 pounds took first. Cameron Rutherford pinned all four of his opponents and won first. Garrett Gibson, 119 pounds took fourth and Ashton Sicilia at 135 pounds placed second.
The Carbon wrestlers traveled to Tooele on January 7-8, 2011, for the Best of the West Tournament.
Carbon wrestlers worked their way through the 16-team tournament to secure a respectable 4th place behind Delta (First), Syracuse (Second), and Kearns (third). Carbon finished ahead of a number of larger schools, including Tooele, Copper Hills, Spanish Fork, Dixie, Riverton, Cyprus, Kearns, and Granger.
Carbon's strength was demonstrated in its placement when considering two weight classes, 171 pounds and 215 pounds were forfeited by Carbon, and 152 pound class was competed by a junior varsity wrestler. Had all of our wrestlers been recovered from injury we would have had a great opportunity to place third.
A solid core of eight Carbon wrestlers entered the medal round Saturday evening. At 112-pounds, Colton Sanderson, a freshman, defeated Justin Turpin of Cyprus by a margin of 15 points, defeated Josh Haley of Delta by decision, and then in the semi-finals lost to eventual champion Branson Ashworth of Spanish Fork. Sanderson then defeated Austin Kennedy of Kearns in the consolation semi-finals, and then lost to Robert Lavios of Tooele to earn his 4th place.
At 119-pounds, Carbon's defending State Champion Bryce Jackman pinned his way into the finals by falls to Tyson Vigil of Tooele, Alexandir Moeno of Grantsville, and Antonio Meikel of Kearns. In a tension-filled match in the finals Jackman lost to Kalin Gray of Syracuse, placing second.
Cody Hunt, Carbon's 125-pound wrestler, battled his way into 4th place by defeating Jared Cook of Riverton in round one by a margin of 15 points, and pinned Austin Barney of Grantsville in round two, then lost to Abraham Hernandez of Kearns. Hunt earned fourth place by defeating Tre Behunin in the consolation semi-finals, and then lost to Brian Willoughby of Delta.
Stefan Larsen at 135-pounds for Carbon, placed second behind Jase Abbott of Delta. Larsen, a second seed in the tournament, defeated by a margin of 15 points Teague Vigil of Syracuse, Daxton Zubeck of Delta, and Isaack Juarez of Kearns on his way to the finals.
At 140-pounds, Wyatt Martinez, seeded second in the bracket, placed fourth after pinning Skylar Ward of Cyprus in 12-seconds of the first round, pinned Jeremiah Jessop of Riverton in the second round, and in hotly contested match in which a judgment call by an official sent the match into overtime, Martinez lost to Delta's Tyler Nielson. Martinez went on to place fourth.
Kenny Wood, at 160-pounds, grappled his way to the finals by pinning Daniel Higgins of Tooele in round one, defeated Taylor Evans of Riverton in round two, and defeated Jarom Putvin of Copper Hills in the semi-finals. Wood lost to champion James Stubbs of Syracuse in the finals.
David Fonnesbeck, Carbon's 189-pound wrestler, placed second behind Michael Schena of Delta. Fonnesbeck won his way to the finals by pinning Kylar Scheid of Cyprus, Josh Batin of Dixie, and Adam Wally of Cyprus. Fonnesbeck's season record to date is 26 wins and 4 losses.
At Heavyweight (285-pounds), David Scoggins placed sixth for Carbon. Scoggins lost in the first round to Gus Lavaka of Kearns and then went on to defeat Jason Outzen of Tooele and Braxon Pickett of Copper Hills. Scoggins pinned Kenny Miller of Grantsville for the 5th place title.
