Wellington firefighters spray water into the burning fifth-wheel to contain the blaze.
An attempt to thaw out frozen pipes under a fifth-wheel trailer apparently touched off a blaze that destroyed the vehicle Wednesday afternoon.
Wellington firefighters, with backup from the Price Fire Department, responded to the fire at the Railco coal loadout off Ridge Rd. at about 2 p.m. They were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby building but could not save the trailer.
Tom Lammert, owner of the trailer, said that he had put heating elements under the fifth-wheel because its pipes were frozen.
He explained that he had been checking on it periodically, but while he was taking time to order parts the fire apparently began.
It spread quickly once it got started.
Firefighters had to use grappling hooks to tear away metal siding so they could get water to the fire inside the walls.
Smoke from the blaze was visible from Price, some four miles away.
The trailer was unoccupied and no firefighters or bystanders were injured.
