Clint Finkbiner goes to the hole early in the game against Juab on New Year's Eve. He finished with 29 points.
The streak of bad weather made it difficult for the Carbon Dinos to stay sharp over the holiday break. Every game they had was postponed. Finally on New Year's eve the Dinos got to step on the floor to take on Juab. After a back and forth battle, Carbon fell short with a 66-61 loss.
Both teams showed their rust in the early going and neither could score well into the first. But It was Carbon who got things rolling as Clint Finkbiner hit a pair of threes and went on to score the first 11 points of the game. It looked like he would be the only one to score in the quarter.
However Juab found then net just as Carbon went cold and they went on their own 11-0 run and soon had the game tied. Tanner Gagnon finally got the Dinos going again and the Dinos went into the locker room only down by three.
Both teams were able to score in the third, but Carbon lived on the perimeter, relying on threes to stay in the game. In the fourth quarter it looked like the Wasps might run away with it, but the Dinos began to penetrate and they pulled back in the game.
With just under three minuted left, Carbon made a critical stop and quickly scored to pull within one. Juab went down and hit a three and the Dinos could not finish things off.
Coach Ted Bianco was not pleased with the outcome. "When we start off with an 11-0 lead we should be able to win the game. Our defense was not playing well. We passed up to many open looks and settled for the outside shot too often. We needed more players to step up and help Clint (Finkbiner.) We started getting that in the fourth, but they need to do it much earlier in the game," said Bianco.
He went on to say, "We were off for 16 days so I was not sure what to expect from them. We could have played better, but we certainly could have played worse."
Finkbiner was smoking from the perimeter with nine treys. He finished with 29 points. Tanner Gagnon was able to contribute 19 points on the afternoon.
The team will take on Grand at home this Wednesday night with tip off for the varsity at 7:00 p.m.
