Sonny Gonzales

PRICE - Our beloved father, step-father, grand-father, brother and uncle Monseis S. Gonzales, age 83, went home to our Heavenly Father on Dec. 29, 2010.

Sonny was born on April 12, 1927 in Menard, Texas to Petra Saiz and Estevan Gonzales. He was born and raised in the small town of Menard, Texas and elementary school was the highest education he achieved. His father passed away at a very young age. Sonny went to work to help support his family. He was recruited into the Navy and served on the destroyer the U.S.S. Iowa during World War II and The Korean Conflict.

After the war he returned to Menard and worked as a sheep shearer. He then met and married Maria Rita Quiroz whom he had six children with. They later divorced. At this time in his life the opportunity arose to purchase a small Texaco gas station and he joined in this venture with his nephew Ernesto Hernandez. He left Texas with brother Bill Gonzales and moved to Price. While living in Price he was introduced to his second wife Eva Escandon and they had one child. With sheep shearing being seasonal he worked as a coal miner for twenty years and at the age of 63 he retired from Sunnyside Coal Company. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America local 9958.

Sonny enjoyed life and thanked God for each day he was given. He was never the type to sit around and do nothing he said there was always something to do and loved to be busy. His favorite thing to do was go fishing for catfish and he had many hobbies. Sonny loved watching his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys. You could always find him glued to the television on a Sunday or Monday night eating popcorn watching the game. He enjoyed collecting rare and valuable coins. During the summer months you could always find him in the parks or in the school grounds with his metal detector looking for lost treasures. But he really enjoyed the company of family and friends that was something he never got tired of. We will miss you Dad, Grandpa, brother and Uncle but we look forward to being with you again and seeing the warmth of your comforting smile, your gentle eyes, that strong voice and most of all your contagious laugh!
