Mariah Pollock keeps her eye on the prize as she heads for a lay-up in an earlier game against Lehi. She lead the team with 15 points in the OT loss to Delta. Carbon came back and beat Richfield 47-43 the following day.
It wasn't quite the outcome the Lady Dinos were hoping for from their trip to the tournament in Richfield. They posted their first loss of the season with an 50-47 overtime loss to Delta before springing back for a solid 47-42 win over Richfield.
Coach Cami Carlson knew her team had their sights set on going undefeated all season. She also knew what a daunting task that would be. On Friday night, Carbon came within a whisker of keeping that hope alive with a great come back effort to send the game into overtime. They fell short in the extra period.
Delta came out strong and the Dinos struggled in the first half, missing shots and feeling frustrated. But a determined team hit the court after the break and after being down by as many as 12, came back to tie it at the buzzer. In the overtime period a couple of turnovers hurt Carbon and they were not able to get the miricle finish they were hoping for.
Mariah Pollock led the Dinos with 15 and was the Dino player of the game. Sara Potts pulled down nine boards. Miranda Averett added 12 points and Tia Pappas contributed 10.
"They were crushed at the loss," remarked Coach Carlson. "But we missed easy shots and fouls all night. If we had played our game the whole way instead of in the second half, we would have won. Delta beat Morgan in their next game and Morgan had been ranked as the team to beat."
After a long wait, the Dinos finally got back on the floor on Saturday afternoon. The off time between games left the team sluggish as they opened play, however they still made sure they would not let Richfield take the game. Pappas, who had struggled the night before, exploded for 14 points in the final period to put the game away. She ended with 27 points in the game. Kylee Lassar was the force on the boards with nine rebounds for Carbon. Sara Potts came up with 10 points in the win.
The Lady Dinos will host North Sevier on Tuesday night with the varsity tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
