Proposed county budget includes pay raises, new promotional office

Carbon County's tentative budget for next year shows an increase in overall spending of 3 percent over this year and includes a 2 percent cost of living raise for employees.

There is also a provision for a new position under the Fairgrounds fund, "Leisure Services Director," with an overall allocation of $150,000.

The job title will probably have to be changed, according to Commissioner John Jones. The responsibilities in the job description are to attract more out-of-county visitors to the Events Center, Gun Range, and other county facilities designed to draw tourism and conventions, he explained.

"The objective is to fill the facilities with the proper groups. That should be good for the entire county," Jones said. By "proper groups," the commissioner meant big gatherings that will bring business to local restaurants and motels without competing with existing convention and meeting facilities.

The promotional director's budget, if approved as is, would include $50,000 in wages, $25,000 for benefits, $50,000 for marketing, with the balance for travel and supplies.

Total proposed county spending for 2011 is $26.9 million, compared to 2010's budget of $26 million.

The proposal also calls for withdrawing a little more than $3 million from the county's general fund surplus and using it to finance current spending.
