Lady Dinos finish 2nd in region; state tourney ahead

The Lady Dinos celebrate a point scored against Wasatch, but they couldn't score enough.

The Lady Dinos were poised to take yet another region title Tuesday night, but were stung instead by the Wasatch Wasps. The Wasps rolled over Carbon in three straight 25-15, 25-8 and 25-20. Wasatch will be the region 10 champs and the Lady Dinos settle for second.

The match started off well for the lady Dinos and the two teams traded points and turn-overs. But it was Wasatch that seemed to get their feet on the ground first and began to run away with the first set. Carbon committed service errors and seemed to struggle with their rhythm and the set quickly got away from them.

In set two Carbon scored the first two points and then the wheels fell off again. They were unable to find any defense to the on slot of kills dished over by the Wasps. Set two was over almost as quick as it had begun.

In set three Coach Bob Potts decided to shake things up and inserted his JV team in to start. The JV team had just finished beating the Wasatch JV squad. They were able to give Carbon some hope and kept the set close. The varsity were rotated in as the set progressed, but eventually Wasatch climbed back ahead and finished off what they had come to do.

'An off night'

A very disappointed team left the court. Varsity player, Sara Potts was comforted by family and friends and then took a minuted to talk about the loss, "we came out tentative. We were nervous and did not play our game. We have some things to work on before the state tournament. We need to work on coming together and supporting each other better to help cover the gaps."

Coach Bob Potts was a bit more succinct, "It was an off night and we'll leave it at that."

The team will have a week to regroup. Next Tuesday night they will take on Grand at home for senior night at 6:30. They will have an 8:00 am game to start the state tournament on Friday October 29 at the UVU McKay Center in Orem. Their first round opponent will be either Emery or North Sanpete.

The bad news for the Lady Dinos is that to go very deep into the tournament they will have to go through teams like Morgan and Snow Canyon.
