Make a difference day

Making a difference in someone's life can be as easy as picking up the phone and calling to say hello. I am Patsy Hough, Program Manager for CARE-A-VAN. I speak to individuals everyday in helping them secure transportation to medical appointments.

Making a difference is not one sided. By helping individuals get to their medical appointments, they are able to maintain a quality of life, and knowing that I am able to help, truly makes a difference in my life.

For the past 14 years, CARE-A-VAN has been providing services for non-emergency transportation. Volunteers have played a vital role in insuring individuals have a way to specialized medical appointments outside of the local area.

How many of us take our transportation for granted? Sometimes it isn't until one is without a ride that they realize how important transportation can be.

CARE-A-VAN makes a difference for the whole community. Doctors and facilities are able to give the proper care to their patients, individuals obtain the care they need to live independently avoiding early institutionalization, and communities remain healthier avoiding pandemic outbreaks.

The same can be said about one's health. Do you take your health for granted? As the program manager, I can tell you first hand that I have seen a lot of different health conditions. I am glad that we have a program that allows individuals the opportunity to meet their healthcare needs in giving them some quality of life.

We never know when an accident or health condition may change our life forever. Young or old - healthcare is vital! Without transportation, healthcare becomes inconsistent which creates other health problems.

United Way has been a valuable partner in making a difference with individuals needing specialized care outside of the local area. Organizations working together for the common good of the people truly make a difference in the lives of others, and those individuals in turn make a difference in our lives as well.

Reach out and make a difference by becoming a CARE-A-VAN volunteer!
