'Team Helper' restores Walt Borla Little League field

A day's work by volunteers creates an emerald green field.

Little League players, parents and fans turned out in force again to restore another ballfield in Helper.

On Friday, they assembled at the Walter Borla diamondon the east side of town to resod and rejuvenate it. Last month, they resurrected the old Pony League field on the west side to make it playable in time for spring practice.

At the Borla ballpark, Helper City workers had uprooted a stand of old trees and completed reroofing the concession stand and dugouts. Work will continue to paint the new roofs later.

The projects have doubled the capacity of playing surfaces for the 11 teams there. Teams from Helper and surrounding areas had been using the Walter Borla park for both competition and practices.

The situation had been overcrowded, with teams limited to only a few practice sessions each season.

Volunteer effort and city support have provided the "sweat equity" on both projects. At the Pony League field. A grant from the county's Recreation/Transportation Special Service District provided construction material.
