The Carbon School District Board of Education had an emergency meeting on Tuesday morning and decided to rescind one of the decisions they made in response to the arrest of Superintendent George Park on Aug. 6.

At a special meeting on the day of the arrest they had met and decided to not only place Park on paid administrative leave, but to appoint a committee of three administrators to run the district's operations until the situation with Park could be clarified.

"Our board president got calls from the State School Board Administration as well as Utah State School Superintendent Larry Shumway," said board member Jeff Richens on Tuesday afternoon. "They had a conversation with Barry (Deeter) and urged him to ask the board to name an acting superintendent."

Consequently, as of Tuesday morning that committee was discontinued and the board voted to name former superintendent Patsy Bueno as acting superintendent. She took over the reins of the district and will stay in place as a half-time employee until the district can resolve its problems with the Park situation.

Bueno left the district just last May, having served as the leader of the district for the prior three years. She had worked for the district for a total of 37 years when she left and had served in many capacities during that time, logging many hours in both the classified and certified ranks, along with the administrative jobs she had.

"We needed to be careful not to mess her retirement up," said Richens referring to the fact that retirement systems often have rules against retirees working very much. "But by putting her on half-time she can do the job and still protect it. It will also save the district money."

Park faces charges of second-degree felony misuse of public funds in Garfield County where he was superintendent for three years. His initial appearance on the charges will on on Sept. 2 in the Sixth District Court in Panguitch.
