The Carbon 13 year old Babe Ruth team played well at state, but the weather and timing gave them some bad breaks that made them very tired on the third day of play, where they had to play four games, one that lasted past 10 p.m.
After earning a trip to Panguich for the state tournament, the Carbon 13-year- old Babe Ruth team found they really had their work cut out for them.
They easily downed Murray 14-0 in the first game on July 19.
Rain plagued game two on Tuesday against Kanab and they left things hanging with a rain delay.
Wednesday saw the team on the field at 8 a.m. for a practice before taking the field to finish the game with Kanab with a 5-2 loss. The day continued with a 11-1 win over Vernal and an 8-4 victory over West Side (Rose Park, Salt Lake City).
Finally the exhausted team found themselves on the losing side of a 6-5 game with Ogden that ended after 10 p.m.
Coach Clark Thayn had nothing but praise for his team.
"These boys played their hearts out, even when they were tired and didn't want take the field against Ogden. Ogden was impressed that we played so well after being on the field so long that day." he added, "I am convinced if we had had a chance to rest and play the next day we would have taken the tournament. Every kid gave it their all. Austin Salazar caught behind the plate for every inning and Wyatt Thayn pitched at least 18 innings of the tournament. Garrett Blanc made a fantastic play in the field. We turned four double plays in the game with West Side and two more in the loss with Ogden."
