The highest elevation triathlon in the United States drew more than 350 competitors, and hundreds more to cheer them on, to Scofield Saturday. The event includes long-distance races in swimming, biking and running - one after another. Competitors are grouped by age and degree of difficulty. The longest category - Escape - demands a swim through frigid waters from the lake island to the boat dock at Mountain View campground, a bicycle race to Electric Lake and back, followed by a 10-mile run. Others may travel shorter distances, but the event is grueling for all who take part. The course through the mountains has plenty of scenery, but not much oxygen. |
