Have you noticed that most of the tough political leaders today are women? The ones who stand up and fight for what they believe in are almost always female. We see Nancy Pelosi, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachman, and Arizona's Jan Brewer out there slugging it out and telling it like it is while the guys hide behind political cover, double-speak and lame excuses.
Women in the spotlight seem more prone to speak their mind than the guys. They are more open, forceful, and seem to be more self-confident. By comparison, most of the men in politics act like wilted violets. John McCain and George Bush come to mind.
I asked Uncle Spud about this, and here is what he had to say:
"It's evolution. American men aren't what they used to be. They've become soft, browbeat, henpecked and timid. Most male politicians want everyone to love them. Taking a strong position on anything might be controversial, and no one wants to be controversial. It might cost a few votes.
"Things weren't always this way. Back in the caveman days, men had to fight. They had to fight for food, shelter, women, and territory. Men had to be aggressive, decisive, tough and resourceful. Cavewomen depended on those traits in men. A strong warrior of a man could insure the survival of the family in a world filled with saber-toothed tigers and few guarantees.
"Things were that way for thousands of years. Into the 1960s our manly ideal was John Wayne. Then, things got to be too tame and too comfortable. Lyndon Johnson gave us the great society and the welfare state. Physical and economic survival were no longer issues to worry about. Who needed a good man? Government would take care of everything.
"Then came the feminine movement of the 1970s. I am woman, hear me roar, became the anthem. Who needed a man at all? Strong-willed, decisive men became objects of ridicule. Women were suddenly liberated from the care and protection of their 'oppressive' husbands and fathers. New-age women wanted soft and sensitive guys, not cavemen. Divorces skyrocketed and single motherhood became socially acceptable. With the welfare safety net, equal rights protection in the workplace, and a new attitude on main street, women took over.
"Women moved into jobs formerly reserved for men, such as truck drivers, coalminers, police, and combat military jobs. They stopped wearing dresses and began dressing like men. They elbowed their way into men's sports, social organizations and military academies.
"The ages-old distribution of labor between the sexes became blurred. It used to be that men provided the living while women nurtured the children and took care of the home. Now, most women work. Men are expected to take a turn at the dishes, mop the floor and change the diapers. No one is taking care of the kids.
"We are a unisex society now. Rules have changed and roles once defined by gender no longer apply. Little boys are being taught to be like girls and little girls are allowed to act like boys. Traits we once valued in men: courage, physical and moral strength, assertiveness and a willingness to take risks are being pounded out of little boys. Active and normal little boys are now diagnosed as having ADHD. We give them drugs to slow them down and dull those improper and troublesome impulses brought on by rising levels of testosterone and a natural tendency toward competitiveness, rough physical activity and a need for adventure. Traditional young male activities like climbing trees, throwing rocks, hunting, wrestling, roughhousing and general hell raising are discouraged, banned and punished. Six-year-olds are expelled for pointing a finger and saying 'pow.'
"Little boys are being taught never to fight, never to hit and never to raise their voices. They are expected to be calm, soft-spoken, agreeable, tolerant, non-judgmental, and let those in authority solve all of their problems for them - a perfect recipe for slaves.
"All of this is troubling to me, because a good conduct medal is of little value when the barbarian hordes are at the gates of the city. History has shown that every nation, to survive, will eventually need men who can wield swords and fight like hell. Saber-tooth tigers are still out there disguised as terrorists and tyrants. There will come a day we will need those manly traits we are suppressing in our youth. I think it's time to turn things around."
"Please, let the boys be boys."
