The Assumption Greek Othodox Church Annual Greek Festival will begin at 11 a.m. Friday. This is the church's big fund drive of the year, and for many years it has attracted visitors and support from across the county and state.
In addition to food, the two-day event will feature dancing, entertainment and tours of the church. The festival will run until 9 p.m. Friday and midnight Saturday.
During the early decades of settlement in Carbon County, the church served as the central point of the Greek immigrant community. While for some of the miners, railroad workers and ranchers, the American Dream was to make money and then go back to Greece, the church provided the stability and cultural familiarity that enabled many to feel at home here. They stayed, raised families and became a vital part of the Carbon community.
