In case you didn't notice, last Thursday was tax day, April 15. That's the day Uncle Sam rakes in your money like Scrooge McDuck. Oh darn, sorry about that, most of you young people don't know Scrooge McDuck. He was Donald Duck's rich uncle who took baths in all of his money.
This year tax day almost coincided with Tax Freedom Day. Imagine that. Tax Freedom Day is the day the average American has finally earned enough money to pay his federal, state and local taxes. For Utah, our Tax Freedom Day was April 11. That means that all of the money you made between January first and April 11 went to the government. For the average Utah family that's a tax rate of about 27 percent, not counting property taxes, gasoline tax, utility taxes, licenses, special user fees and dozens of other hidden taxes. Add it all up and your real tax rate is closer to 40 percent.
I can't wait until Congress imposes the European-style "value added tax" they are talking about. That will raise our taxes another seven to 15 percent. And then, if they impose a global warming cap and trade tax, as they expect to do, that could double our utility bills, raise the price of everything we buy and increase the gasoline tax by another 15 or 20 cents. Gee, if they keep it up they won't have to create any more wilderness. No one will be able to afford to leave home. SUWA would count that as an added bonus.
No wonder there were thousands of people protesting on April 15. There were anti-tax, anti-big government rallies all over the country. Being dangerous, racist, anti-government, tea party rednecks, Jeannie and I attended the rallies in both Salt Lake and Provo. We were real nervous this year, standing next to all of those hate-filled, gun-totting, bible-thumping grandmas and grandpas waving American flags.I can see why the tea party crowd terrifies Nancy Pelosi. Most of them are her age and they know American history and what she is trying to do to our country.
This year there were about 40 anti-tea party protesters at the Salt Lake event. They set up a table near the rally with provocative signs and cups of kool-aid for anyone who dared to partake. They were loud and irreverent during the prayer and pledge of allegiance. I suspect they were trying to pick a fight. The state troopers stayed real close. Their big banner said, "workers of the world unite." I know that's an old communist slogan, but the people sitting next to the banner couldn't have known what it meant because it was obvious that none of them had ever had a job. You know the type: blue hair, nose rings, tons of tattoos, filthy t-shirts and 50-caliber holes in their earlobes. Free speech and free expression are true American values and I accept their right to be there; just don't expect me to support that lifestyle with my taxes. Not without a fight. Take your own advice and join the workers of the world, foolish freak show people. Most of the tea party crowd has worked and paid taxes since we were kids.
Our president made condescending remarks, too. Obama made fun of us at a fundraiser in Miami, Wednesday night. He said instead of protesting, we should be thanking him for not raising taxes. Hmm, I'll bet he thinks we should be thanking him for "giving" us the TARP bailouts, the failed trillion-dollar stimulus package, the failed jobs bill, the GM bailout and that nifty health care takeover, too. I wonder who gets to pay for all of that free stuff?
Our grandchildren don't have a clue what awaits them in the next 20 years if this continues. It's a mathematical certainty that our country will go broke.
And so, some of us continue to march, and protest, and send letters, e-mails and tea bags to congress and the White House. Somehow, we've got to change the direction of our leaky ship of state. She's being run aground by a crew that's self-serving, arrogant, and without honor. Our path to salvation is the ballot box. Vote the bums out in November - all of them.
