Locals excel at state competition

Sun Advocate sports reporter

The area junior high wrestling season ended in December, but a small group of grapplers from those teams decided to invest their time and effort to continue the sport they love.

At the end of January the boys from Helper and Mont Harmon junior highs, as well as the Draggerton Diggers wrestling club, visited Richfield for competition.

They first competed in a national competition and they went back the following week to compete in a state level tournament.

The State tournament featured wrestlers from 1A-3A junior high and middle schools from around the state.

This was not a school- sanctioned event, but the boys from Mont Harmon and Helper were able to use the local school facilities and wore team uniforms. The team was coached by Tom Lasslo, Jerad Hardy and Paul Neese. Parents had to provide transportation and cover the costs of travel and competition.

The following local boys placed in the tournament in their respective weight classes:

Lane Neese (MHJH) first

John Erickson (HJH) second

Ryan Matkin (MHJH) fourh

Kyle Barrett (MHJH) fourth

Isaiah Martinez (DD) fourth

Cameron Rutherford (MHJH) fifth

Colton Sanderson (DD) fifth

J.D. Birch (MHJH) sixth
