Pinnacle boys, girls win state crowns

Pinnacle Academy High School Panthers have a lot to be proud of. The girls just won the annual Utah Schools Sports Association state championship for the second straight season, while the boys finished third in the same tournament.

The girls, while not receiving a lot of media or news recognition, slowly went about proving themselves in the USSA series, defeating Paradigm in the finale, 33-26 on Friday, Feb. 26.

In that contest, Jordan Hamner had 10 points, Darrian Smith had eight, and Haley Spigarelli collected six.

"Winning the tournament for the second year in a row was amazing," Kay added. "The girls practiced hard so they played hard and it showed. It was a team win! Every girl on the team did their job."

The tournament MVP was Smith with 36 points in three games.

The boys HS team traveled to Provo Friday to the Utah School Sports Alliance state tournament and came from 14 down to beat Independence, 50-42 behind some wonderful foul shooting. Chad Martino hit 11 of 12 free throws.

The team then faced Merit on the road - one hour after their first game, and had a strong game by winning 77-56. Martino led the way with 29 points and hit 11 of 12 foul shots. Demetri Hullings and Jullian Garcia recorded 17 points.

The team then faced the eventual champion Paradym in the semi-finals and just could not match up to their superior height, and fell, 57-37.

That loss gave the team the third place trophy. This is the third straight year that the Panthers have brought home a trophy.
