Carbon wrestlers qualify 13 for state tournament

Carbon wrestlers competed last weekend at the Northern 3A Division Tournament held at Ben Lomond High School in Ogden. Ten schools make up the northern division: Carbon, Wasatch, Union, Park City, American Leadership Academy, Ben Lomond, Bear River, Grantsville, Morgan, and Juan Diego.

All together Carbon will send 13 wrestlers on to the state tournament. The Dinos had four wrestlers in the finals: Bryce Jackman at 112 lbs; Wyatt Martinez, 130 lbs; Cole Hunt,140 lbs, and David Fonnesbeck, 189 lbs. All finished as finalists.

Jackman pinned VanValkenberg (Bear River) in the first round, pinned Woolstenhulme (Park City) in the next round, and won by decision over Morgan Sweat (Wasatch) in the finals, becoming Champion at 112 lbs. Jackman is only a sophomore this year.

Martinez pinned Joe Hickey (Juan Diego) in round one, pinned J. Hidalgo (Bear River) in round two, pinned J. Haramoto (Bear River) in round three, and won by decision over C. Breshears (Morgan) in the finals to be champion at 130 pounds.

Cole Hunt pinned Max Christensen (Bear River) in round one, pinned B. O'Conner (Juan Diego) in round two, won round three by Grantsville's disqualification, and won by decision over Bryce Provost (Wasatch) in the finals to become champion at 140 pounds. Both Martinez and Hunt earned a number one seed in the state tournament.

Fonnesbeck pinned J. Morton (Grantsville) in round one, pinned Coomes (Ben Lomond) in round two, pinned D.Brough (Bear River) in round three, and lost in the finals to Kaleb Moritz (Wasatch), earning second place. At 103 lbs, Carbon's T.J. Bettino, won his first two rounds but lost in the semi-finals to G. Bradley (Wasatch), Bettino fought his way back to take fourth.

Jacob Bass, 119 lbs, won his first match. He lost in round two and worked his way back to capture 5th. At 125 pounds, Cody Hunt and Tanner Cave found a way to capture medals at 3rd and 8th place, respectively

At 130 lbs, Ashton Sicilia lost in round one to the second place finisher. He then won his next three matches and captured sixth. Stefan Larsen, 135 lbs, won his first two matches. He lost only to the champion from Union. It was good enough for third place. Larsen pinned all of his opponents.

Samuel Manarite, 145 lbs, won his first three rounds. He eventually lost to the second place finisher from Union and garnered a fourth place. John Hreinson, 152 lbs, fought his way through the consolation rounds to earn seventh. Jesse Bigelow,171 lbs, pinned three of his opponents to finish with sixth place.

"Carbon wrestlers earned three firsts, a second place, as well as two thirds and fourth places. They also had a fifth, two sixth places, a seventh place and one eighth place. These results are from our 12 varsity and seven junior varsity entries in the division tournament," summed up Coach John Watkins about the tournament.

"Carbon's three champions places them second only to Morgan High's four. Wasatch also earned three, followed with two by Union, one by Bear River and one by Ben Lomond."

Watkins went on to add, "The Carbon wrestling coaching staff and Carbon High administration are proud of the achievements of the individual wrestlers and the team as a whole and wish them good luck at state."

The Northern Division 3A wrestlers will face the Southern 3A division teams in the state tournament. Southern teams include Delta, Canyon View, Cedar City, Hurricane, Juab, Desert Hills, Emery, Manti, Richfield, and North Sanpete High Schools.
