An answer

I am compelled to answer Robert Warrens' diatribe about government programs that have been so helpful for the people of the United States of America.

I am 79 years old, and looking forward to many more healthy years. I thank God and liberal law makers for Medicare. It payed for four life and and health saving operations. The first would have bankrupted me and the last three, I would not have been able to have for lack of funds and I would not be around if not for Medicare. There are many contributing causes to the present depression if you are unemployed or still employed and still fearing being laid off, by far the greatest cause was deregulation.

Lets name a few of the laws that have benefited most of us:

Outlawing child labor.

Social security, so that the elderly could live out their lives adequately and independently.

Roosevelt during his first year passed laws regulating Wall street and the banks, so that we would never have another 1929, but due to deregulation, it was replaced in 2008.

The minimum wage law though inadequate, but still very helpful.

Many health and safety laws regulating big businesses and many more too numerous to name. If Mr. Warren wants to do away with government programs, he should go to Afghanistan where there is no effective government.

As far as Obama's plan for health care reform, he does not go far enough.

Every other decent industrial nation has a national health plan that covers everyone at less than half the cost. If Mr. Warren wants to go back to the founders of our Democracy, they promised the rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You can have none of them if you lose your health. Admittedly, we have the best health care that money can afford to buy. Most of us do not have enough money to cover expensive healthcare.
