Deciding to attend courses either in the traditional manner verses on-line education requires a lot of consideration and contemplation. Most non-traditional students who are battling long hours of employment have to consider the advantages and disadvantages of participating in college courses.
Whether the student is taking courses online at home, in an office setting or attending classes in the traditional way of traveling to a university or college facility, the required time available to participate in college courses reduces the students involvement with family, friends, and sports activities either for ones self or with ones family. According to the article Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Education. "One of the major disadvantages of online education is the self-discipline it requires."
The decision is quite a quandary. Students find themselves cramming at the very last minute to complete the assignments on time during the weekend, all while desirous of participating in other activities after a long week of working for an employer. A well disciplined student will remind themselves of the reason or reasons they are spending the required hours away from other activities to complete their higher education goals or demands.
However, that's not to say self discipline isn't required for campus students either. Campus students have to put up with dorm life, if not living at home or in an apartment. Loud stereos, parties and sometimes just plain chaos can go on day and night. Roommates may want a student to go on an outing or go to a party. Again a well disciplined student will turn down the offer and concentrate on finishing their studies.
Another thing to consider is if the student attending campus courses lives off campus, is there travel time to and from work or home involved as well as getting physically to the college facility. Attendance can be hampered by common interferences such as weather conditions,as well as traffic and road construction projects. And then, of course, there is parking.
An online student generally does not have to deal with the pressure of traveling to get to class because that student is usually taking courses from home. On the other hand some advantages of attending a campus program is the face to face interaction with instructors. In addition being able to know other students in the same class is very desirable as a person gets involved with forming relationships or study groups.
One disadvantage of participating in an online education is if the student does not have good time management skills. Time management is defintely a requirement to succeed in an online course. According to student.org, within those confines the traditional campus education program may be the primary choice to gaining a college education because with a campus program, students are expected to be in class and are forced to keep up with instructor's assignment schedules. If not they risk failing the course.
Technical difficulties can also add to a online students woes. The online student can experience the loss of Internet service or technical problems with equipment.
Whether one decides to attend online education courses or go to classes in the traditional style of attending a campus program, students should enjoy the experience to its fullest.
They should hit the books hard and not let those that aren't going discourage them in the endeavor to complete a dream of gaining a higher education.
Who said getting a higher education was easy anyway?
When it is all finished and one walks across the stage to receive their degree, that is when gratification is achieved.
