Miranda Averett leaps high to send a kill over the net to help the Dinos down the Wasatch Wasps to hold onto first in region play.

It was a must win match for the Lady Dinos on Tuesday night. Wasatch came to town for their final game of the season, desperate to knock the Dinos down. Both teams had to win to keep their chances of the region title alive.

The Lady Dinos had beaten the Wasps before in the first region match-up in Wasatch. But they have also lost to them in a weekend tournament. It was a hard fought match with the crowd hanging on to almost every serve for three sets, but set four was all Dinos, as they prevailed to take the match. The final scores were 25-16, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-10.

Carbon came out on fire in set one. They took a quick early lead and never let Wasatch back in the game. But in game two they settled in and the Wasps came out stronger and set two went to Wasatch.

In game three, both teams seemed to know that the outcome of the match rested in who gained momentum. It was up and down the entire way with both teams fighting for the prize. With one final push, Carbon stole the set and the momentum. Game four saw Wasatch throwing everything at Carbon to try and take back control. But the Dinos felt the win and had answers for everything. Carbon dominated the final set and came out with the win.

Joy Malone crushed the Wasp defense as she sent 27 kills their way. Miranda Averett and Sara Potts put up 10 kills each to give Carbon balanced front line offensive effort. Kacylia Ivory scooped up 18 defensive digs and Mariah Pollock had 11. Shaylee Donathan dished out 27 set assists and Alexis Oliver added 13. Overall it was well balanced team play that helped the Dinos overcome the good Wasatch attack.

Coach Bob Potts was happy with his squad. It was senior night and he has seen the emotion of the experience affect players before. But he saw a focused and committed team take the floor and take care of the task at hand. But for him and the team, there is little time to savor the win as they have to face ALA in Spanish Fork on Thursday to finish off region play.

ALA beat Carbon at home earlier to hand the Dinos their only region loss. ALA has two losses, one to Park City and another to Wasatch. Carbon has to beat ALA to take the title this year. If they lose the tie breaker goes to ALA because Carbon would have lost to them twice. The Dinos played ALA without their kill leader, Malone, in the earlier match-up.
