Youth soccer a hit in Carbon County

Sports writer

Athletes from the Raptors under 12 team race for control of the soccer ball in a game played earlier this season. The new soccer league is making waves throughout Carbon County and is currently the only soccer league in existance in the area. The youth league will help to prepare athletes for high school competiton and allow them to gain the valuable playing experience while having fun.

Although soccer is a popular sport amongst children across the state of Utah, it seems as if Carbon County is the last to catch on to the craze.

For years now the community has not offered a soccer league for children interested in the sport. In fact, it has become a nightmare for Carbon High soccer coaches to find athletes who have experience in the sport because no junior leagues have been offered in the area. This all may change now that a newly formed girls soccer league has kicked off its first season here in Carbon County.

The Raptors soccer league began competition this summer and the program offers girls ages 14 and under the opportunity to compete in the competitive sport. Not only are the girls gaining valuable experience, but they are also having loads of fun.

Thus far this season, the under 12 girls team has had a successful year. The teams record currently stands at 2-3-1.

The under 12 Raptors team successfully defeated the Orem Raiders 8-1 in the opening game of the season and once again the Orem team fell to the Raptors 4-2.

Last week, the Raptors scored their only tie of the season when the team held the Pleasant Grove Wallabies to two points.

The under 12 team will compete in its final home game of the season this Saturday as they host the Heber Valley Storm. The game will take place at the Mont Harmon field at 1 p.m.

The under 14 Raptors team remains winless this season however the team has showed improvements and continues to have fun.

The team competed in their final home game of the season Wednesday evening and will finish the season off Saturday in Orem.

In a sport which relies heavily on teamwork, the youth soccer program teaches the valuable lessons that are needed to compete in the sport of soccer. Although soccer is a demanding sport, the girls that compete in the Raptors league are more than willing to sacrifice hours of their own time to compete and have fun.
