June was declared Volunteer Fire Fighter month by the Sun Advocate and the paper sponsored a subscription contest in which fire fighters throughout the county could win gift certificates from Bill's Home Furnishings. The idea was to get money for equipment and special needs for the various fire departments. The Sun Advocate agreed to pay the fire departments that sold subscriptions $20 for every new subscription and $5 for every renewal they came up with. In addition the top sellers would also get a $600 and $400 gift certificate to Bill's for the most new subscriptions and the most total subscriptions sold, respectively. Last week the individual winners were announced. A tie in selling resulted in a split of the $1000 into two parts.
