Volleyball set to start things off right

The Carbon Volleyball team will hold its annual Blue/White Game on Thursday August 20 in the Carbon High Gym at 6:00 pm. This is a chance for the public to meet the coaches and players for the upcoming season.

Coaching staff consists of Varsity Coach Bob Potts, JV Coach Mariana Becheli, Sophomore/Freshmen and Coach Randilyn Leonard.

The team has four seniors this year and all play key roles. Middle hitter Joy Malone averaged 3.14 kills a game last year.

She will be attacking the ball hard again this year. Malone should average four plus kills a game this season and is fun to watch as she loves to hit the slide. Shaylee Donathan is taking over the setting duties and has plenty of offense players to dish out assists to. If the passing is good, she may be one of the top assists leaders in the region.

Melinda Molinar has moved from the middle hitter position last year to the opposite outside hitter this year.

The team will count on her blocking outside hitters from opposing teams and quick offensive hitting. Rounding out the seniors is Sam Olson who loves to hit from the back row and has a downright mean serve.

She is a defensive specialist and will be counted on for defensive digs that really keep play alive for the team when things get tough.

This year's team will also have another powerful outside hitter in junior Tia Pappas. She led the JV last year in kills per game and puts the ball down.

Alexis Oliver, another junior, has moved from setter to Libero and will be the back row captain as she moves on and off of the floor.

She is very athletic and at times seems to be flying through the air making sure no ball hits the ground. Her passing skills are a great example for any younger player to learn from.

Juniors Sara Potts and Mariah Pollock will also play big roles in the outside hitting duties. Sophomore Miranda Averett plays the second middle hitter position and beside good height also posses great speed.
