The Helper American Legion has not had an easy season, and while things might be getting tougher, the team hopes it can prove it has what it takes for the up coming state tournament.
Wednesday night brought the Olympus team to Helper for another league game.
Once again our pitching struggled to start the game and we could not slow Olympus down. We did however hit the ball much better in this game and ended up winning by the same score as Monday night 11 to nine.
Clint Finkbiner started with zero at the mound and pitched three innings. Once again we had too many walks and pitched from behind the count all night long. However Beau Rich came in and pitched very well as he was only allowed three runs for the game. Neither Clint or Beau have seen a lot of time on the mound this year, but they are both are going to be asked to help us out as we wrap up league play and start the state tournament.
Danny Flahie and Beau Rich led the offense out, with two hits apiece. That night we totaled 10 hits, but our defense is what really stood out. The win moved us to 10 to one in league and a 16 to five overall record. Friday night saw Cyprus come to town for a league doubleheader.
The first game saw Cyprus jump out to a six to zero lead after the first three innings. Walks and a couple of errors led to runs. And on the offensive side we could not get anything going. We managed only four hits for the game and then adding 16 walks by our pitchers and seven errors by our defense you come up with a loss every time. We did manage to score one run in the seventh inning and the final score was six to one.
Derrick Anderson started on the mound and pitched three innings and Colter Moore once again came in to pitch the final four innings. Too many walks, errors and not enough offense resulted in us losing our second league game.
Knowing we needed to bounce back, we took the field for the second game of the doubleheader. Both teams were quiet in the first couple innings, but in the third both teams woke up.
Nate Martinez tripled and Beau Rich followed up with a single. After a walk to Daniel Pezuh, Tyler Bean had a big double that scored two runs. But our lead did not last long as Cyprus came in and scored four runs of their own. Bradan Bolotas started on the mound and ran into trouble in the third inning. He started getting behind in the count and when pitching from behind usually things are not going to go well. Add four errors in the inning and when the inning finally got over the score was tied at four to four. We scored one run in the fourth, but allowed Cyprus to score two in the bottom of the fourth and the score stood at six to five after the four innings. Beau Rich came into to pitch and for the second time in the week did a very nice job. Beau threw strikes and stayed ahead of the hitters but our defense continued to struggle and Cyprus scored one more run in the sixth and won seven to five. Again we only had seven hits for the game and we committed eight errors on the night. The loss puts us at 10 to three in league. We are still tied for second place and we have three league games left this week. To sum up the week's performance its easy to see that average pitching, poor defense and not a lot of offense will lead you to losing games. We went two to three for the week and this was a real set back to the good baseball that we had been playing. Some positives was the return of Colter Moore who pitched very well and also the pitching of Beau Rich. I was very disappointed in our execution and our overall play for the week. We really need to step it up this week and finish off the league on a positive note.
Games do not get any easier this week as we have a double header tonight with Taylorsville who at this point is 10 to zero and in first place. We finish up Wed with the T-Ville U17 team. Wednesday's game is in Salt Lake and will be a tough game also. We beat the T-Ville U17 team to open the league season at home three to one in June. These are all important games as we are playing for a top seed in the upcoming state tournament. We will finish up games next week on Tuesday July 21 as Gene Taylor's out of Grand Junction will come to Helper and we will play a doubleheader with the first games starting at 5pm. .
