Commissioners favor company's recycling proposal at local landfill

The July 1 county commission meeting was filled with some new developments concerning Carbon's landfill recycling program as well a review of last year's tax levels that have come forward.

The county landfill has had a chipper for yard waste for some time, but it has not been until recently that it has received the attention of non-county entities.

Waste Logistics wishes to use the chipper to reduce the amount of bulky yard or "green waste" that goes into the Carbon County Landfill.

And while WL also intends to sell the resulting compost for profit, the commissioners, viewed the proposal favorably.

"Part of our mandate in opening that landfill was we were going to recycle part of it," said Commissioner Mike Milovich during the meeting.

The landfill might last up to 50 years longer if recycling takes off, added Milovich.

Although green waste can be chipped and reused, the proposal also included the sludge WL pumps out of septic tanks.

The sludge can be mixed with the green waste in a 50 to 50 ratio solution to create a kind of compost that reduces the space used at the landfill.

And if the two types of waste are combined, it has an additional benefit of saving money by not having to hull various types of waste around the county.

In order to make the deal work, WL would sell the resulting compost to the public so a partnership will need to exist between the company and the county in which local government will have access to the compost for use its sites. However specifics have yet to be finalized.

"We need to embrace this and work out the details," said Commissioner Bill Krompel. "This will add to the life of the landfill."

Tax rates for the 2009 were also examined and approved in which the general fund generated around $4,926,505 at a rate of .002306.

The rate was up from the previous year of 2008 in which only .002149 was approved.

Although the 2009 rate was higher, it was down from earlier years. In 2003 the approved rate was .002443.

County assessing and collecting funds produced $646,475 at .00303 and municipal services were at $289,949 at .000183.
