Last Friday, HR-2454 passed the house by a narrow vote. Obama and Pelosi got their way. The American Clean Energy Act of 2009 (cap and trade) is another step closer to being law. Only the U.S. Senate stands between us and an economic meltdown. The Senate will vote on the bill sometime soon.
The purpose of cap and trade is said to be: "To create clean energy jobs, achieve energy independence, reduce global warming pollution and transition to a clean energy economy." Sounds great, eh? Well, lets look at each part separately.
President Obama made a speech last week in support of the bill and he said the legislation would create "green" jobs for Americans. Unfortunately, green is the color of B.S., at least in this instance. His teleprompter could only name about 5,000 jobs that would be created for sure, and most of those were short-term construction jobs. But he assured us the bill would create many more jobs that he didn't mention. I'm sure he's right. This bill will create a whole new government bureaucracy that will need to be staffed and funded. It's the creation of private sector jobs that is in question.
The president didn't talk about jobs that would be lost, and there might be a million of those. Our core industries like mining, milling, manufacturing, and coal-fired power plants will be hardest hit. Some will close, some will go overseas, and others will cut way back in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. There are sure to be massive lay-offs. This will push us even deeper into a non-producing, service industry economy. Most of those jobs pay less and require only temporary or part-time workers. You know, the kind of jobs Americans don't want. These are the ones we save for illegal aliens.
And then, the president says this bill will put us on the road to energy independence. After killing off our coal-fired power plants, he expects to run the country on wind and sunshine. That's a worthy goal, but the technology isn't there yet. We can't run a single major city with wind and solar power today. How do they expect to run the whole country that way? And besides, the enviro-nazis don't like green energy any more than oil and coal. Every place it's been tried they tie it up in lawsuits because they don't want the power lines or the unsightly wind turbines or acres of solar panels.
If energy independence really is the goal, we could be energy independent in just a few years if only we were smart enough to tap into our god-given oil and coal reserves. Why not do that while the scientists work out the wind and solar technologies of the future? I guess it makes too much sense.
The other goal of this bill is to prevent global warming by reducing CO2 emissions. Excuse me, but CO2 (carbon dioxide) is plant food. Look it up in your high school science book. The other major pollutant they want to stop is water vapor. Hmm, isn't that what rain clouds are made of? And again, there is no human cause for global warming. During the last ice age and altithermal warming event there was not a single smokestack or automobile on earth. And yet it happened anyway. Think about it. Can you say sunspots? I don't think we can control those, even with Obama in charge.
In my humble opinion, this cap and trade fiasco is simply a way for our criminally insane politicians to impose massive new taxes while paying a political debt to their environmental friends. They intend to legislate their big government enviro-socialistic agenda and impose their will through force of law and punitive taxation. Every household in this country will pay for this through much higher energy bills, higher costs for consumer goods, higher layouts for unemployment and welfare, and loss of tax revenues, jobs and individual freedoms. If this becomes the law of the land, we will be living in a whole new world. Talk about change we can believe in.
And so, call and write your senators, and while you're at it, rewrite your household budget to include new taxes, cost increases, fees, and inflation like you've never seen before. Oh yes, and did you know that there's a resolution before Congress to repeal the 22nd amendment and remove term limits for a sitting president? H.J. Resolution 5 would make it possible for Obama to be president for life. I think that's what they have in Venezuela with Hugo Chavez.
Just think of the possibilities.
