The Carbon Dinos soccer team returned home last Wednesday as the team hosted Grand. Although the Dinos do not have a field to call their own, the team does play on the college field where they claimed their first win of the regular season.
Grand started the game with a goal five minutes into the game after the Dinos made a defensive coverage mistake by leaving two grand players open.
The Dinos bounced back quickly however when Katie Capalbo scored on a fast break. Capalbo later took advantage of a second fast break to score the second goal for Carbon before the half.
The second half of competition proved to be the time for the Dinos to shine. Julie Swinburne blasted a goal in about midway through the second half. This was followed by Kristen Donaldson kicking in a loose ball with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.
The Dinos played strong and their defensive game was boosted by Whitney Montoya and Sharon Watson. Both girls took turns playing man-on-man defense against Grand's fastest player. The Dino twosome completely shut her down.
Dino coach Dave Capalbo was quick to praise the efforts of Watson and Montoya and explained that "usually people only notice the players who score, but defense is what wins. If a team can't score, they can't win the ball game."
The Dinos will return to the college field Sept. 26 to take on Lehi who is currently sitting on the top of the region 8 standings with a 4-0 record. The Dinos will remain focused and hit the field determined to capture their second win of the season as they compete against their biggest opponent to date.
