The Soaring Eagle of Juan Diego soared over three Dino teams on Tuesday as region action resumed in softball, baseball and soccer after spring break. The outcome of all three was as dismal as the weather on Tuesday.
Dino baseball lost to the Soaring Eagle 19-3, while the softball squad dropped their contest 10-6. Both were home games.
The soccer team headed up to play Juan Diego and lost 5- 0.
For the baseball team the game was over almost before it began as Juan Diego went up 10-0 in the first inning. They tacked on another nine before the third was finished. It wasn't until the fourth before the Dinos could post three runs of their own. The Dinos had been through three pitchers before they could slow down the Soaring Eagle offense. The game ended in five innings.
Coach Troy Moynier just had to surrender to the damage as he sat in the dugout toward the end of the game looking up at the score board.
"We got off to a slow start," he stated. "They hit us pretty good and we didn't respond."
On the other field the Carbon softball team was also engaging in a battle with the Juan Diego girl's team. For the Lady Dinos it was a close game for most of the contest, but in the end the Soaring Eagle bested the Lady Dinos.
Juan Diego hit one over the fence in the second to go up 1-0. The Dinos came back to go up 2-1 in the third. But in the fifth a costly miscommunication in the outfield caused two runs to be scored for Juan Diego. Carbon came back and won back a run, but remained one back of the Draper team. Then in the sixth it was several miscues that allowed Juan Diego to go up 10-3.
Again the Lady Dinos fought back with two in the sixth inning and a run in the seventh. But three more runs were not enough and they too fell victim to the Soaring Eagle.
"We got ten hits in the game. We got enough hits and scored enough to win. But a few errors, that is what really hurt us." said Coach Tony Pinedo after the loss.
Finally there was the Dino soccer squad who were taking on Juan Diego for the second time in a week. They had lost a close battle last Tuesday, but this this time it was all Soaring Eagle.
Rain fell most of the game as Carbon played valiently against one of the best teams in the region. In the first period Juan Diego found the net after several good goal line stops by the Dinos. They scored again after the Carbon goal keeper was called for a penalty in the box and they got a free kick.
In the second period the Dinos held the Soaring Eagle scoreless for 15 minuntes and then Juan Diego found the net again for their third score. Carbon couldn't stop them much after that and the Soaring Eagle hit for two more to finish things up.
Coach Patrick Clifford was happy overall with the first half of play from his team. But again they were missing a key player and the team just doesn't have the depth to adjust.
The soccer squad heads to Roosevelt to take on Union on Wednesday. Delta travels into Dinoland to challenge the baseball team on Friday. The softball team has a week to readjust before they face North Sanpete at home on April 21.
