CEU Golden Eagles edge SLCC for a pair of wins to end season

The College of Eastern Utah nen's basketball team finished off conference play last weekend with two strong winning performances against 13th ranked Salt Lake Community College.

Both games went down to the wire with the Friday match-up going into overtime. In the end, however, the Golden Eagles prevailed in both games and swept the nationally ranked Bruins 83-80 on Feb. 27 and 76-73 the next night.

Despite being tied with College of Southern Idaho for third place, CEU will head into SWAC tournament play as the fourth seed. CSI held the tie breaker position with its wins over the Eagles this season.

On Friday night, Chandler Pearson played a monster role in the late stages of the regulation play as well as the overtime period. At the key moments, he came up with huge rebounds, shot two of two three pointers and ended up with just six points.

Darington Hobson had yet another double/double with 25 points and 13 rebounds. With 19 of his points coming in the second half.

Phillip Thomas made a major contribution with 14 points. Stephen Franklin scored 10 and Mike Scott dished out eight assists and scored eight points.

With the regular season ending on Saturday night, CEU culminated a four game winning streak by downing the Bruins once again.

Hobson scored another 17 points, going none of 13 from the free throw line. Franklin scored 15 points on five of 11 shooting and Pearson hit for 11 points.

Thomas added 10 to give the home team four players in double figures. Mike Scott dished five assists during the Saturday contest.

CEU made 10 more free throws than SLCC as foul calls were close with 20 going against CEU and 22 against the visiting squad. Charity stripe points proved to be an important role in the close victory over the Bruins.

North Idaho beat Snow to garner sole possession of first place and will host the SWAC conference tournament in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

CEU will play the only game played on Thursday, March 5 as they take on the number five seeded Snow College, game time will be 7:30 p.m.

The winner of that game will play the number one seeded North Idaho on Friday March 6 at 7:30 p.m. The other half of the bracket matches nubmer two SLCC vs. number three CSI.

This is a single elimination tournament. The Golden Eagles have had a very successful season ending with a 23-6 record. They finished conference play at 9-6. The team's only losses this year were to conference opponents.
