Patricia Smith hustles the ball down the court as the Dinos take the lead in an earlier game at home.
Britni Greenwood prepares to go up for a rebound against Juan Diego.
As region nears the Lady Dinos know they must finish perfect in order to start the tournament as the region eight number one seed. They moved one step closer to that goal with a 50-39 win over the Lady Rabbits on Tuesday night.
Carbon jumped out on the Rabbits and had them doubled up at the end of the first by a score of 16-8. Delta attempted to keep the game from getting out of control, but despite a stronger second quarter, they were still down by 10 as they headed into the locker room.
The Dinos poured it on in the third to drive their lead over Delta to 16. It was just a matter of keeping their focus as they sailed to another region win.
Patricia Smith was the Dino scoring leader with 17. Julia Potts was named the Dino player of the game for the second straight time with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Britni Greenwood was a force on the boards with seven rebounds. She also added nine points and had three assists and three steals.
Delta had a better shooting percentage over the Dinos in the first half of the game, but Carbon shot twice as many field goal attempts as they allowed the Rabbits to take. Again the Carbon defense held their opposition in check.
"It wasn't necessarily what I would call a good game for us. We started off slow. We were a bit lethargic after the long bus ride and it took us a while to shake it off. Our defense played as good as usual, but our offense hit some dry spells and we were having trouble hitting some of our shots. But it's a win and we'll take it," commented coach Carson.
Thursday has another big game looming for the Dinos as North Sanpete is always tough in their home arena. The huge, noisy crowds take the game to another level and if the Dinos can put the Hawks away, then Emery will be the only team left to stand in their way. The earlier season loss to the Spartans is still a stinging reminder that the Lady Dinos need to play each game hard all the way to the finish.
The Dino-Spartan rematch is Tuesday, Feb. 3. Game time begins at 7 p.m.
