Emily Cox stuffs one in during an earlier game. She had five steals and five rebounds in the Tuesday night win against the Union Cougars.
Despite only scoring six points in the first quarter of play, the Lady Dinos never looked back in their seventh win of the season over the Union Cougars on Tuesday night. In the end the result reflected another dominating victory with a final score of 56-28.
Union came out with a defense that seemed to bother the Carbon offense. Coach Carlson said it was a press, not too much pressure, just enough to make the Dinos uncomfortable. So while the Dinos held the Cougars to only three first quarter points, they only managed to post six of their own.
But the second period it was back to normal as Carbon went on a 16-2 run against Union to take control of the game. By the end of the third the Dinos had pushed the lead to 34-12 and began to make adjustments. Carlson again pulled off the defensive press and began to send in the bench. Even with those changes Carbon outscored Union 22-16 to give themselves a comfortable finish.
"After Colorado, where we weren't challenged much, it was good to have Union throw their defense at us and make us play," remarked Carlson about the slow start and the Dinos recovery from it.
Patricia Smith continued her offensive outbursts with a 24 point game. She had a third of her points hitting from the line as she went eight of 11. Sophomore Sara Potts got some good court time when senior Joy Malone could not dress due to illness. She made the most of her time scoring 10 points.
Carlson gave her some praise. "Sara went in for Malone and hustled. She got most of her points from her four offensive rebounds."
Emily Cox picked up five steals and five rebounds. Tia Pappas ended up with five rebounds. Karlee Martino scooped up four rebounds. Samantha Smith had another perfect game at the line as she stroked in six of six gift shots.
The Lady Dinos continue their preseason play with a trip to Uintah this Thursday night. They have one more game before the Christmas break and that will be on the road against Park City.
