Olivia Jeppson is one on many Carbon soccer players returning next season. She will attend camp to improve her skills over the summer as she looks forward to next season. Carbon lost to Logan 6-0 in the first round of the play-offs for the 2008 season and hopes to have a stronger squad in 2009.
The Carbon girl's soccer team went one and out in the quarter finals of the state tournament against Logan. Logan downed the Dinos 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon to end their season.
Logan finished first in their region and played like a team ready to go all the way. Carbon was not able to keep up and Coach Jerald Upwall felt like they gave up by the second half of play. "They were psyched out before they hit the field. They had heard about Logan's number one scorer and as soon as they saw her they lost it." he said. "She was very tall and looked imposing."
Upwall felt like his team played hard during the first half. "Logan wasn't that great and we were pretty evenly matched, but it is hard to over come that losing mentality. Carbon has lost in the first round so often I don't think they believe they can do any thing else." But even with the loss, it was good for the girls who were new to the team this season to see what a play-off experience is really like.
At this point Upwall is looking forward to next season already. He is looking to send goalie Olivia Jeppson to a goalie camp. "Even though this was her first time at all at the goalie position, she did well. But she still uses her volleyball moves to defend the net and this will help her learn some new skills."
He is also hoping to take the team to a team camp. "The girls are all excited about the possibility of going so we will see if we can make it happen." The switch in region opponents will also be a good thing because there will be no past history to overcome. A true fresh start for a team that has come a long way over the past three years.
