A Carbon cross country runner helps his team take third at region.
The culmination of over 200 miles, early morning weight workouts, weekly 800 meter repeats and determintation resulted in the Carbon High cross country team pulling together on Wednesday Oct 15th when it mattered most. The team had been running strong all year proving they had what it took to perform well at region and continue onto state.
Only the top four teams in the region advance. The 12 boys that represent Carbon team stepped to the line and took third place with 94 points. North Sanpete and Salem Hills claimed the top two spots and Delta grabbed the final state qualifying berth with 99 points. Emery was edged out of a slot by a single point.
Individually the top seven finishers also advance to state. Carson Tatton finished 8th and will accompany the top seven to State as an alternate.
For the Dinos after Tatton, the top runners were Kaleb Kulow in 15th with a time of 18:43, Jordan Tatton in 17th, Justin Hepworth in 18th, Nathan Hepworth 21st , Luke Olsen 23rd, Jared Richens 26th and Kaeden Kulow 29th. There was only a 28 second gap between the top five Carbon runners, the lowest it has been all season.
The girls this year were led by Patricia Smith and Karissa Nelson. They had to compete as individuals at region. Smith has said all along her focus was State and she needed to secure a top 10 finish at region to continue on. She finished 9th overall and will continue on to state as an individual.
Nelson had a goal to finish in the top 20 and set a new personal best for herself. She achieved both with an overall 18th place finish and new personal best on this course of 22:26.
"I am very pleased with the team and all the hardwork this season." reamrked Coach Telisse Allen. She went on to say, "also wanted to mention that seniors Jared Richens, Jordan Tatton and Patricia Smith were awarded Academic All Region. The entire teams GPA is 3.73! That is remarkable in its own. I am extremly proud of all of them. They represent Carbon well.
The State meet will take place on Wednesday Oct 22nd at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake.
