Carbon County kids learn safety protocols while operating Off Highway Vehicles

Scott Wheeler, a local OHV trainer, along with Keith Haycock and Kari Christman show this young OHV operator how a rock would feel if it hit his head with a helmet in place. The team trained 25 youth 14 and under how to ride four wheelers and dirt motorcycles on Saturday at the Carbon County Events Center. The program is set up to certify those under 16 with operators licenses to run dirt machines on public property including BLM and state land. The course includes a written test that the students study for by pre-registering with the state and receiving a handbook and then an afternoon of hands-on operation under the guidance of the trainers. The course emphasizes safety and courtesy in operation. Those under 16 who are caught operating machines on public land without the certificates can face some fairly stiff fines for doing so.
