Coach Patrick Clifford knew that when region play began, Carbon would face some of its toughest competition yet. So far it has proven to be true as the Dinos lost 3-1 to Juan Diego and then dropped a heartbreaker to North Sanpete to move to 0-3 in region eight action.
The Dinos struggled in the first half against Juan Diego on Wednesday afternoon. "We played sloppy in the first half and got ourselves in a hole we could not get out of," was Clifford's assessment of the game.
Juan Diego slipped in two goals in the first half of play while Carbon could not get anything to hit the net. Most of their shots on goal soared over the bar as the brisk breeze made them sail. Both teams began a bit of trash talk and the referee called the captains over and told them in no uncertain terms to "knock it off!"
The Dinos came out more focused in the second half. They played an even game with the Soaring Eagles and each team sent one in for a score. The difference in the game was the first half play of each team. Spencer Denison scored his first goal of the season.
The team hosted the North Sanpete Hawks in a grueling battle on Friday afternoon. In the first half of play neither team took control and the game was scoreless. Again Carbon went into the second half and showed they were a team to contend with. They controlled the play and took 24 shots on goal to 12 from the Hawks. They just didn't put the ball into the net.
With less than three minutes to play, a Dino defender over played the North Sanpete player, allowing him a one-on-one shot at the goal. Jake Malone did his best, but the ball squirted in and the Hawks had the win.
"I feel bad when our team plays as hard as they did and we still lose. I have said before this is one of the toughest regions in the state, any team in it can beat any other team. But for a goal here or there, we could be three and 0 instead of 0 and three. We have been right in every game we have played so far," noted Clifford.
The Dinos will play Delta on Wednesday at the Carbon High field at 3:30 pm. And then on to Juan Diego on Friday for another region game. They will finish region play with an away game on Wednesday, April 23, against North Sanpete.
