On Saturday Carbon Blue open the day by beating Vernal Red and finishing in seventh place. Providence went on to beat Vernal Blue for fifth and sixth place respectively. Grantsville was victorious over Logan for third. Logan under up with fourth.
With all the other places resolved all eyes focused on the championship game between Morgan and Carbon White. Carbon White won the coin flip for home team advantage. Over the whole tournament Morgan was the only team to even score a run against Carbon White so they knew they were in for the fight of their life.
Holding Morgan scoreless in the first inning, Carbon proceeded to jump up by four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. A couple of hits in the inning and a two run slam by Marcus Montoya put four on the board. Morgan then came back and got a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning to tie it up.
Carbon did not score in the next three innings as Morgan's pitcher shut them down. Morgan, though, was able to score three more runs over the same three innings; with all of their runs coming on homers. Even though Morgan hit four blasts, the Carbon pitchers continued to hold their own.
Finishing the top of the 5th, Morgan had the 7-4 advantage. In the bottom of the fifth Carbon began to make their own move. A solo shot over the fence by Jordan Blanc and then one by Derek Young brought the score to 7-6.
Helper shut down Morgan in the top of the sixth. With one out and Carbon down a run, Josh Jones crushed a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence to tie the score at seven. Unable to score again, the game went to extra innings.
In the top of the seventh Carbon stepped up their defense and shut Morgan out once again. Carbon came into the bottom of the seventh inning needing only a run to take home the championship.
The first batter up in the inning was Derek Young. Young had homered in the fifth inning and wasted no time in the seventh as he took the 1st pitch over the right center field wall for the game winning, walk off home run. Final score; Carbon White 8, Morgan 7.
Over the whole week the Carbon County fans far out numbered even the local Logan fans. The hundreds that were there wasted no time in congratulating their team from Carbon County. Forty years have past when, in 1967, a team from Helper won the Little World Series.
"It was a complete team effort as all 12 members of the team played and contributed to the final win of a memorable 2007 season." raved Coach Jeff Cisneros.
