Paul Goodrich competes in the mile race at this years state track meet conducted at BYU. Goodrich placed third in two separate events on the day.

On May 18 and 19 the Carbon High track team competed at the state meet, conducted every year at Brighgam Young University.

"Most of the 14 Carbon athletes that competed came back having run their best times of the season, which was a great way to end the year," said Carbon High assistant coach Isaac Goodrich.

Patricia Smith had a great race in the 800 meter.

When assistant coach Stu Foster watched Smith take the early lead, he said "Whoa, I didn't tell her to do that!"

But Smith surprised everyone by hanging onto her pace until near the end of the race and finished in 8th place.

Her time of 2:22.64 was good enough to break the 27 year old school record, beating out Misty Larson's record of 2:23 that has been the record since 1980.

"Paul Goodrich was outstanding for Carbon," commented Carbon coach Jimmy Jewkes.

This was his senior year, and Goodrich wanted to finish his last races at his very best.

Goodrich went into the 1600 meter ranked 10th among 3A schools, and he crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 4:25.

Karlee Martino competes in the 4 X100 state relay at BYU.

Goodrich also finished the 3200 meter race in 9:44, earning him third again. Both races are Goodrich's best times in those races, and both are only 4 seconds off the school record.

Goodrich also ran the 800 meter placing 13th, followed by Jared Richens, who ran his best time of 2:11.

Robert Lowe and Kent Olsen also competed in the 1600 for Carbon, with Robert running his best time of 4:59.

Olsen also ran in the 3200. Both Olsen and Lowe will return next as seniors becoming Carbon's top distance runners.

Travis Hepworth and Brock Morley ran the 300 meter hurdles, finishing tweleth and fourteenth.

"This was an excellent finish for Brock who finished second among the freshman in the event and will be back in the coming years to improve on his times," said Goodrich.

Jordon Tatton had a great race in the 200 meter with his best time of 24.21.

In the high jump, Megan Garvin tied for eighth place, and she will return next year as a senior with a goal in mind to break the school record.

Also finishing for Carbon in this event was Chantel Jensen in eleventh.

Samantha Smith, Britini Greenwood, Felicia Olmos, and Karlee Martino ran the 4x100 relay, finishing with their best time of the year at 53.51.

"It was a great year for the team, and there is much to look forward to from the returning athletes for next years season," concluded Goodrich.
