Stress Management tips


There are many ways to manage unhealthy stress. The way stress is managed is to learn about ones self. Some skills individuals already possess; some they will have to learn. And learning new skills in self management is as unwield as learning how to play the piano for the first time or taking ones first steps. It takes time and work.

•When stress strikes, take a deep breath.Shallow breathing causes more stress. People can only think about one thing at a time. Concentrating on taking deep breaths will take the mind off the stress.

•Manage time, all the time. One of the greatest sources of stress is overcommitment or poor time management. Plan ahead. Make a reasonable schedule and include time for stress reduction as a regular part of that.

•Don't try to survive in isolation. Being by oneself is fine, but being lonely is different. A good way to combat sadness, boredom and loneliness is to seek out activities involving others.

•Express the feelings. Bottled up emotions increase frustration and stress. Share those feelings to someone that is trustworthy.

•Take a private, one moment vacation. Create a quiet scene. When you have the opportunity, take a moment to close your eyes and imagine a place where you feel relaxed and comfortable.

•Physical comfort is important. Be as physically comfortable as the situation will allow. Wear comfortable clothing. Too hot or cold are not good when in stress.

•Work out physically. Physical activity plays a key role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress. Walk, run, go the the gym or just work physically hard at something. Stress levels will drop.

•Physical health is important. Healthy eating and adequate sleep fuels the mind as well as the body. Avoid consuming too much caffeine and sugar. Bodies that have the right nutrients in them handle stress better.

•Laugh out loud. Maintain a sense of humor, including the ability to laugh at oneself. Laughter helps one forget stressors. Like a nights sleep, after laughter things never seem to look as bad.

•Know the limits of control. A big source of stress is people's efforts to control events or other people over whom they have little or no power. Before worrying and stressing, ask what power you have to control the situation.

•Don't always have to be right. Must you always be right? Do other people upset you- particularly when they don't do things your way? Consider cooperation or compromise rather than confrontation. A little give and take on both sides may reduce the strain and help you both feel more comfortable.

•Avoid medicating with drugs or alcohol. Alcohol and other drugs do not remove the conditions that cause stress. Although they may seem to offer temporary relief, these substances only mask or disguise problems. In the long run, behavior while "under the influence" increases rather than decreases stress. Prescription medications should be taken only on the advice of your doctor.
