United Way sets Christmas in July

Christmas is coming early this year. On Wednesday, July 31 at the Peace Gardens in Price, for the "Christmas in July - Hillbilly Jam Ice Cream Social and Silent Auction" " sponsored by the United Way and Community Volunteer Center.

Local "celebrities" from the political and media sectors will be on hand serving ice cream and vying for the coveted "Public Servant On the Take" award, which is awarded to the public servant who garners the most "bribes" during the evening. All proceeds from this event will go to the "Warm Kids/Community Angels" project, which helps low-income families during the holidays.

The public is invited to come and beat the heat with a delicious ice cream sundae, enjoy live entertainment, and do some early Christmas shopping at the silent auction. This year's grand prize allows the winner to be a "Celebrity for a Day" - and provides a night at the "Castle Creek Inn" (an authentic Scottish Castle in Sandy); a limousine ride courtesy of "Deano's Limousine" to an invigorating spa treatment at the exclusive "Sanctuary Day Spa" in the ZCMI mall; followed by dinner for two at the "Melting Pot" restaurant in Trolley Square.

Other prizes include a "Summer GetAway" with two tickets to any city that Southwest Airlines flies, and a "Girls Night Out" courtesy of the Sundance Institute. Local politicians and other celebrities will be "on the take" all evening, accepting bribes and taking graft from local citizens.

But people can support their favorite public servant, and make a difference to low-income children at the same time.

The event is Wednesday, July 31 from 7:30 to 9:30 at the Peace Gardens in Price. Tickets are $2 for a single serving, $5 for all-you-can-eat or $15 for families which includes ice cream and entertainment.

Contact the United Way at 637-8911 for more information. Donations for the silent auction are being accepted, and local high school students will be visiting local establishments over the next couple of weeks, to ask for auction items, or support of the ice cream social.
