|Jordan Moynier eyes a pitch against the North Sanpete Hawks. Moynier hit a grand slam homer to end Tuesday's game here in Price.|
Tuesday's cold front brought snow flurries, cold wind and a victory against North Sanpete for the Carbon Dinos. In front a blanket wrapped home crowd the Dinos put the freeze on North Sanpete with a 16-3 win.
Tyler Turcasso started the game with two shut out innings off the mound.
The Dinos gave him a four run cushion to work from in the first inning and tacked on three more in the second. Sitting on a seven run lead, Turcasso seemed to stiffen up and had trouble getting the ball in the strike zone.
The Hawks leveraged the walks into three runs before Brett Johnson came on in relief and shut them down.
That was the end of the scoring for the Hawks.
Not so for the Dinos who had only just begun. After letting North Sanpete back in the game in the third, the first two batters for Carbon went down quickly.
Then a small two-out rally let them tack on another run and the momentum of the game shifted back to the Dinos.
The team added four in the fourth and were leading by nine going into the fifth. With the wind not getting any warmer, they desperately wanted to end the game in five.
Needing one, the team had bases loaded when Jordan Moynier stepped up to bat.
Moynier ended the game in grand style, a grand slam style. He hit his first home run since his little league days and ended the game with a walk-off grand slam.
Despite the heroics, Coach Moynier was pleased with the efforts of the entire team. Even with the walks given up, his pitching only allowed the Hawks one hit. Johnson came in at a critical point and the game and pitched well.
Coach Moynier was also happy with the total performance of his offense. JJ Blue, Kyle Assay and Ron Herrera each smacked a double. Marcus Zaccaria smoked a triple and there was the home run blasted by Jordan Moynier.
Delta rolls into town on Friday to play a double header. First pitch is at 2:30 for game one.
Delta is considered a stronger team than North Sanpete and Coach Moynier knows that this will be a tough contest for his team. He is grateful for the quick ending to the Tuesday game as it saves his pitching rotation for the match-up ahead.
