After being rocked earlier in the week by Juan Diego, it seemed like the Dinos were destined for another error plagued game. But after committing three errors and allowing a pair of runs, the girls settled down and played some good ball. The result is they walked away with a 7-4 win over rival Emery.
As Coach Pinedo said in the pre-season, the games against Emery are always unpredictable. And the Thursday match-up was just that. Down by two as they came to bat the first time, the first Carbon batter grounded out, but an illegal pitch was called and she got a second chance. She ended up on base with a walk and came around to score before the inning was over.
Up by a run as they headed back out, the confidence was back for the team. The tentative play that had allowed the errors and runs in the first was replaced by solid fielding.
Emery could not put anything on the board for two more innings.
Carbon got some good wood on the ball again in the second and extended their lead to 6-2. Each team added a score in the fourth. In the final inning, Emery tacked on a single run and the Dinos celebrated the final out.
Whitney Williams and Sarah Norton each hit a double as Carbon pounded out 10 hits on the afternoon. Pitcher Paige Pinedo held Emery to four hits.
Frustration showed on the face of Coach Pinedo during the first inning, but as his team settled down, the smile returned and he was pleased with the play he was seeing from his team on the field.
The squad will play in the Polar Bear tournament in Salt Lake this weekend. They have a road game on April 4 against Union before resuming region play against North Sanpete on April 10.
It will be a long road stand before they get to play before their home town crowd again. Their next home game will not be until April 26 and that game will start early.
