Residents failing to monitor controlled burns face paying costs for assistance

Fire Chief Darrel Valdez approached the East Carbon City Council during Tuesday's regularly scheduled meeting.

Valdez reminded East Carbon residents that the closed burn season would run from April 2 to May 2.

Residents wishing to conduct a burn must contact city hall in order to be issued permits, which will be valid for two days. People should also let the Price dispatch center know when they are planning to burn. Valdez cautioned citizens that they will be financially responsible for burns that get out of control and require local fire department assistance.

Helper fire department awarded federal grant for extrication equipment

Helper city officials received notification that the city's fire department has been awarded a grant for a new complete electrical Jaws of Life extrication system, valued at $20,000. Along with the equipment, the grant will pay for firefighters to receive training from the manufacturer.

Helper currently has a gas operated extrication system. The grant will fund the purchase and training for a second system.

The federal grant does not require a local match. As a result, Helper residents will not have to pay for the new system.

City attorney approves language in joint public safety complex agreement

During a council meeting on March 27, resident Barbara Robinett approached East Carbon officials regarding the status of a proposed joint public safety building. East Carbon and Sunnyside are not on the agenda for the Utah Permanent Community Impact Board's April meeting and the matter has caused concern among local residents.

According to East Carbon Mayor Orlando LaFontaine, officials have received approval from the city's attorney on the language of the interlocal agreement. East Carbon plans to be placed on the agenda for the next CIB meeting.
