First quarter woes sink the Carbon Dinos

Sun Advocate sports reporter

Blake Najera goes up strong in an earlier game vs. the Delta Rabbits.

In many games it comes down to the final minutes of play, but in Friday night's game against Delta it was the first 15 that did the Dinos in. The 45-56 loss to the Delta Rabbits reflected the 11 point deficit that the Dinos got into in the first quarter of play.

In the first quarter, the Carbon defense had a hard time slowing the Rabbits down as they put 19 points on the board to the Dino's eight. By the second quarter the Carbon defense had adjusted and Delta only outscore Carbon by four.

After the break the Dinos came back and outplayed the Rabbits by four to move the score back to an 11 point shortfall. In the fourth, the teams battled it out to a draw and the 11 point bonus that Delta had racked up in the first quarter. If they could take the first period out of the equation, the teams played to a draw.

Dustin Pollastro hit for 18 points on the night, Joey Keller stepped it up with 13. Continuing to be accurate from the outside, Zac Jones hit a pair of threes to finish with eight points on the night.

In a rare Tuesday night game for the Carbon boys, they will take on North Sanpete. In a game that got lost in the Carbon/Emery rivalry week, the Dinos registered their first region win against North Sanpete on January 17th. They hope that they can take another one from them in front of the hometown crowd Tuesday night. Game time will begin at 7 p.m.

Carbon, North Sanpete and Emery are tied for third in region eight play with one win apiece so this weeks games are critical to decide which will go on to the playoffs and who won't. The boys from Carbon also have to go down to Castle Dale on Friday night for a rematch.
